Once upon a time (1991) an ex-boyfriend told me about the Maryland Renaissance Festival and asked me to attend with him. I had never even heard of renaissance festivals at the time and was a little wary. I agreed, but I was positive that I wasn't going to have a good time. When the scheduled day arrived (September 15) I even tried to think of some excuse not to attend. Rick wasn't buying my lame excuse and off we went to Crownsville MD.

I was inside the gates for about 5 minutes before I decided that this could possibly be the coolest place on earth. I was completely enchanted by the costumes, smells, accents, music, landscape ... by everything. Since Rick had been to the faire on several previous occasions, he served as my tour guide. Our first stop ... a pub to see The Bawdy Balladeers. We sat with people we didn't know and sang and drank and laughed ... I can't remember ever having a better time. I was HOOKED.

Rick took me to the Joust. He introduced me to King Henry VIII (Bill Huttle). He got me my very first soup in a bread bowl and Canterbury Pork Pocket (foods I CRAVE today in the off season). We saw The Pyrates Royale ... little did I know that this group would in later years help me form my faire persona.

I don't have many pictures from those first few years of faire, but the ones I do have are pretty funny ...

My roommate Connie is making use of my first garb. I think we were going for the "Stevie Nick's wench look".

Peter worked at the Enchanted Cottage ... which is one of my favorite booth still today.
